Oh dear! EXE's won't run any more

Postby Glyn Hughes » Mon Aug 22, 2016 10:29 am

Oh dear! Following a mysterious update to Win7 most .exe programs created with NB have stopped working completely.
NB itself runs fine, but it now won't run a program 'in make' in f9 debugging mode.

This leaves me in a bit of a pickle. Anyone help?

Hello,

Sounds like a Problem with user rights and Windows UAC.
Where do you store your Pub and exe-files?

Regards

Thanks for the quick reply. EXEs are all over the place. Some in own folders on C:\, others in the 'programs' folder or in their own folders under 'documents'

One on Linux works perfectly under Wine.

Any idea?

Windows 7, 8 and 10 are very picky about where they will allow NeoBook (or any other program) to create exe files. Generally, you should set the target folder in NeoBook's compile/publish screen to somewhere under your Documents folder. This should allow you to compile and test apps from within NeoBook.

For exes that were compiled before your recent Windows update: One of the plug-ins used in your apps may not be compatible with later versions of Windows. The plug-in crashes during initialization, which prevents the exe from loading. Usually there are no error messages from Windows. This can also affect test running from inside NeoBook. Try uninstalling all plug-ins from NeoBook and compiling a simple blank publication.

Also, try recompiling your apps with the current version of NeoBook (5.8.7).

Aha! Thank you.

The problem seems to be with the NeoBookFM/FTP plugin. Remove it, and everything works fine, replace it and the problem recurs.

I do have the latest (28/6/2015) version of NeoBookFM/FTP, and it is shown as 'registered'

There is nothing odd - as far as I'm aware - with my version of Windows 7.

What shall I do now?

I'm not aware of any problems with FM/FTP under Windows 7, 8 or 10. I use it here with Windows 10 constantly without any errors. The only thing I can think of is that your apps that won't run are attempting to navigate (using FM/FTP) to a folder that Windows does not want you to access.

What happens if you compile one of the sample pubs included with FM/FTP?

Are you using NeoBook 5.8.7?

Thank you for that.

In just the last few minutes my MSW has mysteriously given itself another update - and everything works again. No, I have no idea.

But thank you for your quick response, and keep up the wonderful work!
