Where is the data steam coming from? A hardware device, serial port, etc?

Hex is just a different method of representing numbers (or characters in some cases). Can you convert the hex data after receiving it from the device?

This isn't strictly true. There are some values such as hex 00 that cannot be represented as an ascii value. I know I was trying to use a number of hardware devices based around Arduino's that I have had to put on hold until someone produces a plugin that can read and write hex values.

Most C++ and other languages compatible serial communications libraries are not open source and so unable to be added to a plugin.

Do you mean because "00" is two characters? Isn't that still equal to zero decimal, or is there a device somewhere that interprets "00" as being different from "0"?

It's about string representation of dec/hex/etc... values, as we input data as string and plugin do expect incoming data as a string. we still cannot pass special hex values like 0h and other as a string, it's just non-printable. So, plugin must recognize passed-hex-as-string and do conversions.

Sorry, I should explain that I meant hex 00 as in ascii Null. Hex FF would be 255 decimal which is why it is always shown as two digits.
http://www.asciitable.com/ might show better the values I use.
