Application Virtualization and Application Streaming

Postby dpayer » Wed Sep 24, 2008 6:23 am

Here is a huge new trend in software development and distribution. You can read about it here: http://juice.altiris.com/svs

Microsoft has a similar product they acquired and are developing (search for softgrid and virtualization).

The concept is this: a virtualization creator works in this manner. You run the creator and then "install" an application on a machine. The creator captures all registry entries and records what DLLs are used, etc. You then have this portable app that can be distributed. The machines that use it have a licensed runtime that will allow you to run INSTANTLY that virtualized app. It does not need to INSTALL. It simply runs within the context of the runtime. So you can have portable applications that can be utilized immediately and they can be reversed immediately if there are problems. Symantec and Microsoft are using this in conjunction with licensing servers to allow groups to use various applications. They can control versions and access within that context.

The interesting point is that you can create a Virtual Application that you don't have to worry how it will 'install' on Vista / XP / etc. It just runs.

Wild eh?

Thinstall has had this for a while. It basically wraps the program in a virtual place with all the OS files it needs. It's good to see that others are following the trend.
