Regarding User FuntKlakow (SpamBot) ?

Postby Cipolla » Wed Mar 22, 2006 2:38 pm

I wondered about some messages of the new user FuntKlakow.
Now i read in a local php-forum that this is a bot who registered in thousand boards.

A quick google search will show up some interesting informations.

Just to inform you.

Dave, maybe it is a good idea to take care of the forum.
Greetings from Germany

Dave: Do the google search, and go to the first forum. Having read 9 pages of complaints, it seems that activating Visual Confirmation for signups will stop this bot, so far. My search popped up 310,000 results for FuntKlakow, so this is a problem. Visual confirmation just requires that you type in a random number, generated by the forum, when registering. Seems an easy thing to do to stop possible future hacks. I would also block and ban this user.

At this point he (or she) appears to just be a board spammer. Posting phony topics to get their spam sig in. Let's hope it's just that.

Thank you Cipolla, for the heads up!

Thanks for the info. Visual confirmation is already turned on, but it was off for a short time when we experienced problem with our sever a few weeks ago.

Yup. Same MO. His spamming signature didn't show up because he enclosed it in brackets []. There will no doubt be others.

Sadly PHPBB seems to be suffering the same fate as PHPNuke as far as being a hacking and spamming target.. Probably time to gently start creating some sort of archive and thinking about a different board.

If the Nuke experience is anything to go by it will just get worse and by the time you've blocked one bot/hack the next one will be on it's way.

Sigh....
