RSS Forum Feed

I don't know if it possible using phpBB, but it would be really useful if the Neosoft forum was available on rss feed.

I don't know if phpBB supports RSS feeds. If you can figure out how to do it we can look into implementing it.

The phpbb site has 2 or 3 mods that look easy to implement, and shouldn't break the forum. With one, you only need upload files to server, and call a url, if using opera, or give your feed program the url.

A RSS reader is required to view the feed.

This feed uses version 0.91, so it should be compatible with most readers. If it isn't, switch to a different reader.

If you use Opera, just give it the url above. Should also work in any other browsers that support RSS feeds.

This could open up the possibility of downloading forum discussions ... and saving them in a local database.

Looks like the above link returns one entry for each update made "today" ... is there information on the exact criteria ? ... e.g. what time zone is used to define "today" ? ... and are there additional (url) parameters to extract entries for a "day in the distant past" ?

The feed would use the server time, so what is today for the server is today. This mod is probably the simplest of the ones I looked at. The documentation was sparse. I would think that the rss reader would be responsible for viewing any past posts.

The mod is open source. It is actually an adaptation of an earlier version someone else wrote. Got it off the phpbb site. If one new some php, I'm sure it would be possible to add code to allow parameters. The data it provides could be manipulated in many ways at the user end. Neobook could easily be used to process the feed.

If I can find the time, I plan to play with those prospects a little.

The nice thing about RSS is that you can get a free reader that would simply sit in the task bar and tell you when new post was made to the sectio you were subscribed to (or whatever the RSS file stated). You are then free to go to the site via web to review the context if desired, otherwise you would see the post in the reader.

For me, I prefer NNTP servers for support issues as they come up in my Email client (Outlook Express) and I can participate easily. I don't need to bring up a browser, the latest greatest is there waiting for me. With the right kind of NNTP server you can have web access too.

Of course you can always write your own rss feed reader using Al Meyer's freeare plugin tmRSS. To work with this forum's feed you just need to establish if the Item Description is ordinary text or, in the case of this feed, HTML and route it appropriately to either a Text or Browser Object.
