The nice thing about RSS is that you can get a free reader that would simply sit in the task bar and tell you when new post was made to the sectio you were subscribed to (or whatever the RSS file stated). You are then free to go to the site via web to review the context if desired, otherwise you would see the post in the reader.
For me, I prefer NNTP servers for support issues as they come up in my Email client (Outlook Express) and I can participate easily. I don't need to bring up a browser, the latest greatest is there waiting for me. With the right kind of NNTP server you can have web access too.
