The "Would you like to take a quick tour" message appears everytime NeoBook starts.

NB5.6 doesn't re-open the last used pub, as did the previous versions.

I still haven't been able to reproduce this problem here. Is everyone having this problem or is it only some people?

I downloaded and installed the latest install. Went smoothly. Still brings up the tour request, and doesn't load last pub used. Blank pub no longer shows grid though.

WinXP Pro SP2. Installed in different folder.

Dave: I assume that this information is written to the registry. Is there anything you would like me to check in there?

Carlos: Do you ONLY get the tour screen? Does it load the last pub used?

Unfortunately I`ve had to uninstall the beta version as I`m unable to test or compile pubs without it shutting down (the Pub not NB) and displaying windows error messages...

These were in the event log for what it's worth

Strangely, it sounds like NeoBook is actually saving changes to the registry, but not reading them, which is the opposite problem than I would expect. I've installed the beta on several PCs, but none of them are exhibiting this problem.

Could those of you who are comfortable modifying the registry, try running regedit.exe and renaming NeoBook's registry section. For example, the the current registry section is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\NeoSoft\NeoBook 5

Try renaming it to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\NeoSoft\NeoBook 5 Old

(NeoBook must not be running when you do this.)

Then start NeoBook 5.6, open a publication, make some changes to the preferences, etc. then close NeoBook. Return to the registry editor and see if a new NeoBook 5 section has been created or not. Try running NeoBook again and see if the changes you made are retained.

Domino:

Does that error message appear with all publications or only specific ones? For example, can you run an empty publication or any of the sample pubs included with NeoBook? Also, what version of Windows are you using?

Dave:

As I mentioned in my email to you (before I read this post) ... renaming the Registry (and allowing v5.6 to create a new section) seems to get over the problem of remembering the last saved pub.

It did create a new entry for me. Ran Neobook again, and I still get the tour request, and it didn't open the last pub.

I also noticed that once renaming the registry entry, the config reset to default, whereas the first installation picked up the config from the last version. I suppose that's an indication it was reading the registry correctly.

1. All Pubs - old, new, empty, blank. (compiled pubs don`t work either and display similar error)

2. Windows Version:
OS Name: Microsoft© Windows VistaT Ultimate (32 Bit)
OS Version: 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001

Typical error for old/blank or new pubs
This event from V5 sample Pub...

Log Name: Application
Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000
Task Category: (100)
Level: Error

Description:
Faulting application Newspaper (Test).exe,
version 5.6.0.32767,
time stamp 0x2a425e19,
faulting module kernel32.dll,
version 6.0.6001.18000,
time stamp 0x4791a76d,
exception code 0xc0000005,
fault offset 0x000bf285,
process id 0x854,
application start time 0x01c8e6b7d63aea00.

To be clear though... Compiled Pubs from earlier versions continue to work correctly... and NB worked correctly prior to the Beta install.

Just as an aside...
I`m quite willing to believe this may be a one off - In my experience of Vista it's not unusual to get these errors because of other software conflicts... I installed a program the other day... one I`ve been using for years and Internet Explorer stopped working!!

Step 1: Backup all data you want to keep.

Step 2: Boot into Hiren's Boot CD.

Step 3: Delete primary partition on boot drive. Recreate partition.

Step 4: Format partition as NTFS.

Step 5: Install WinXP with SP2 or 3.

First Service Pack released and it's still a piece of garbage.

Pub made after installing 5.6 beta on Vista 32-bit system (home premium) won't run at all (F9).

Error message: "NeoBook_v5_Test_Publication!!! has stopped working. A problem made the program stop functioning as it should. The program will be closed, and you will be notified if a solution is available. (Close)"

No solution available.

Same with the HangMan sample pub distributed with version 5.5.
