FM/FTP & Windows 7 Starter

We have a customer who is trying to run a publication created using FM/FTP on a netbook with Windows 7 Starter edition installed. When he tries to run the pub, nothing happens - no error messages, nothing. No problems on other versions of Windows 7 have been reported. Unfortunately, we don't have anything with Windows 7 Starter installed so I can't tell if this is a problem with Starter or just this particular PC.

Has anyone tried FM/FPT with Windows 7 Starter?

The problem does NOT occur on Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Pro.

Apparently only Windows 7 Starter is affected, but so far only one PC (poster mikeyww above) with Win 7 Starter has been tested. It's not known if the June 2011 issue is the same problem or not since it was resolved.

mikeyww: Have you tried recompiling your sample pub on the Win 7 Starter PC? This was the solution to the June 2011 issue.

Can you test run the publication from within NeoBook on Win 7 Starter?

You might try using the Dependency Walker utility (available here: to scan the compiled pub exe. This should tell us where the problem lies.

The results from Dependency Walker are very interesting.

The report seems to indicate that the PC is running Windows XP rather than Windows 7 Starter. However, this could mean that the exe is being run in XP compatibility mode. Try right clicking on MWCHAT.EXE in Windows Explorer and selecting "Properties" from the popup menu. Navigate to the "Compatibility" tab, and see if compatibility mode is set to "XP". If it is try turning it off.

Also, Dependency Walker reports that the two DLLs below are missing:

IESHIMS.DLL should be located in the "Program Files\Internet Explorer" folder and WER.DLL should be located in "Windows\System32".

Can you check and see if these files are present?

Also, what version of Internet Explorer is installed on this PC?

IE9 shouldn't cause any problems.

Try running the Windows 7 System File Checker on the Windows 7 Starter PC. This will make sure that all Windows 7 system files are where they should be and not corrupted, changed, or damaged. Here are the instructions:

If that doesn't solve the problem, try the following (On the Windows 7 Starter PC):

1) Run Windows Control Panel.

2.) Double click Internet Options.

3.) Select the Advanced tab.

4.) Click the "Reset" button. Now click Reset again in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, and then click Close.

5.) Click OK.

Try running your publication.

I'm running out of ideas. It's possible that some of the limitations of Windows 7 Starter are preventing the FM/FTP plug-in from running. It's not a Windows 7 issue since there are no problems running on full versions of Windows 7 like Home Premium, Professional, etc. I believe that Starter is only being installed on netbooks.

It would be helpful to know if the problem occurs on all Windows 7 Starter PCs or just this particular one.
