Size filed is too long

Postby smartmedia » Fri Feb 15, 2008 10:26 pm

Hi...

I have created an access database with DBPro, i have enter a string field with 500 characters size.

From help
String
Variable-length character data with a maximum of 8,000* characters. Used for storing text or combinations of text and numbers, such as addresses. Can also be used for numbers that do not require calculations, such as telephone numbers, part numbers, postal codes, etc. Some types of databases refer to this field type as a "VarChar". The desired size of the field is specified in parenthesis. For example: String(500)

Creating the table i get the error that "Size of field Quest is too long."
Maybe there is a mistake in help ??? as far as know string fields can only take 255 characters unless they are VarChar.
is Any ideas why this is happening, maybe a bug...???

Thanks

According to this website ... http://www.databasedev.co.uk/fields_datatypes.html ... access offers two string fields ... Text which has a maximum size of 255 characters ... and Memo which can store as many as 64,000 characters.

A quick search on Google shows that SQL databases permit anywhere from 1KB to 2GB for text fields ... even different versions from the same supplier/vendor offer different limits.

In Neodbpro, the 'text' field is called a string, and of course memo is memo.

I've always assumed that the maximum is 255 characters. But have never tested it. Sounds like Smartmedia just has, and proved that is the limit.

At the bottom of the list of field types in the help file:

*Maximum field sizes vary widely between databases and even among versions of the same database. Check your database's documentation for exact field properties.

Here's a little info I ran across:

Number of characters in a table name: 64
Number of characters in a field name: 64
Number of fields in a table: 255
Number of open tables: 2048 - Actual max is less, since access opens some by default
Table size: 1 gigabyte
Number of characters in a Text field: 255
Number of characters in a Memo field: 65,535 when entering data through user interface; 1 gigabyte when entering data programmatically.
Size of an OLE Object field: 1 gigabyte
Number of indexes in a table: 32
Number of fields in an index: 10
Number of characters in a validation message: 255
Number of characters in a validation rule: 2048
Number of characters in a table or field description: 255
Number of characters in a record (excluding Memo and OLE Object fields): 2000
Number of characters in a field property setting: 255
