Also, I don't think they even store the password but a hash of it. Then when you enter the password, it hashes that entry and compares it to what has been stored. That way they never have the actual password.

I am aware that you can crack Access DB, Excel, Powerpoint and Word passwords, you can sniff Outlook/WindowsMail passwords. I am not aware of any program that can take the encrypted info found in your profile and construct your windows logon password from it. I know there are ways to force a CHANGE in the admin password but read it? no.

What are you trying to do?

It is correct that windows only stores the hash. There are ways of cracking it but if I knew your software was attempting to do so I wouldn't use it. Creating such software doesn't fit in my book of "best practices".

I think the real questions here are why do you want to read it and what is the application you are creating, so that we could be aware and not use it.

It is just because some times I forgot my passwords, and if it's saved to the computer, then there is maybe a way to get it back.
