Check if file is encrypted

Postby Wrangler » Wed Aug 24, 2011 10:24 am

Anyone know of a way to check if a file is encrypted? I've discovered that the file encryption plugins out there don't work on Win7 x64. I want to check if existing config file is encrypted, and delete it and create a new one if it is.

Or is anyone aware of an encryption plugin that works with Win7 x64?

Hello,

Depends on what you understand under an encrypted file.
Is it a binary file or an encrypted string file.
When you do not know the used encryption, how can it be detected?
So when an encrypter would use a sort of header in the file it might be able to detect the encryption.

What sort of encryption plugin do you search on Win7 x64?

It's an encrypted string file. Encrypted on x32 with Ronnie's FileSystemManagement plugin which doesn't work, but gives no error.

What sort of encryption plugin do you search on Win7 x64?

Just one that will encrypt text files or strings and that works with Win7 x64. I tried NeoCrypt, but it gives access violations.

Did you try to get support for both plugins?
(I am not aware of problems with my hpwPlayAction-plugin which uses also string-encryption)

Both Ronnie's plug and neocrypt are no longer developed or supported.

Does hpwplayaction encrypt files, or just strings?

Both, but there is currently no separate Decodercommand.
Playmacro makes more than you need.

:)

In fact I am working on the Windows Cryptography API some time ago, for example, on my npHash plugin. I find the way to use the API not only to get hashes, but also to encrypt and decrypt data. It is true that I know this thread, but, the reallity is that npCiph plugin are on the way, before or after, on the momment that I can write an object (very similar the npHash use, allowing to abort, with progress capabilities, etc.) that allow me to encrypt and decrypt files using the Windows API. And the day is come. ;)

Yes. I see. Thanks for finding that Hans. I initially did a search, but I didn't see that post. I will give it a try.

I know this has been discussed before, but it shows the importance of continual support and development of plugins. I have several progs that encrypt the config file being used by hundreds of users. When a user upgrades to x64, all the data in it are lost as there is no way of decrypting the file.
