Are you logged in as admin? If you installed neopaint as a user, could be the user doesn't have the privileges to make associations. Kind of grasping here, as I can't think of anything else that would cause the problem.

I'm in as administrator.
I am going to try installing Neopaint 5 again now that I removed Neopaint 4.

Let you know.

Ok. Tried re-install Neobook 5 over the installed one.
Did not associate with any files.
Not available as a program to associate files.

So I un-installed Neopaint 5. Re-boot the computer.
Installed Neopaint 5 again.
Still no luck.

What program is being used to install Neopaint 5.?

By the way, I find a possible program is NeobookDBPro Report Designer.
Strange, but why not Neopaint?

Even selecting Neopaint in the 'choose program/select from list' doesn't help.

NeoPaint doesn't have any control over file associations in Windows XP. If the wrong program opens when you double click a file name in Explorer, then that means the association for that file type is set incorrectly. Unfortunately, the method Microsoft used to associate file types in XP is very easy to screw up. (It's been vastly improved in Vista and Win7.)

Our installer for NeoPaint 5 doesn't add NeoPaint to the recommended programs list for XP which we will correct in a future update. (Although, this is exactly the same as the install for NeoPaint 4.) However, appearing in the recommended programs list or not does not affect the program's ability to be associated with a particular file type. (Again, this process has been vastly improved in Vista and Win7!)

To associate a file type with NeoPaint 5: locate and right click a JPG (or other file type) in Windows Explorer. Then choose "Properties" from the popup menu. Click the "Change" button next to "Opens with". Then click "Browse". Go to the "..\Program Files\NeoPaint 5" folder and select "NeoPaint.exe".

Another explanation:

Exactly what I have done with no success.

I know I have to get with Windows 7 +

Just have to start Neopaint 5 first and work with files.

Thanks anyways.

Can you elaborate ?

a) does it show NeoPaint5 as a possible choice ? (I have not downloaded it yet) ... if not, can you get to it via the Browser Button ?

b) if you can specify it, does it then open NeoPaint5 ?

c) did you remember to check the box that says "Always use the selected program to change this kind of file" ?

Can't get Neopaint 5 to associate/open with e.g. jpg file

Is installed under C:\Program Files\NeoPaint 5

b) if you can specify it, does it then open NeoPaint5 ?
No and still doesn't show in program list. Right now its default is Windows Viewer. Alot of other chooses to open the file appear even text editors but not Neopaint 5.

c) did you remember to check the box that says "Always use the selected program to change this kind of file" ?
Yes

T'is a puzzle.

Sounds like something in your registry is messed up. Try associating a different file type like GIF, BMP, PNG, etc. and see if those will work.

No and still doesn't show in program list.

When you click on the button labelled Change, Windows XP pops up a dialog box with the title of Open With ... on this Dialog Box, an inch above the Cancel Button is one labelled Browse... ... this button will allow you to navigate your C drive and designate any program on it.

Done all that.

So what happens after you choose NeoPaint5.exe ? ... does it open the image file in NeoPaint5 that one time ? ... if not, what happens ?

Only negative thing I can think of is that it seems a bit laggy when the undo feature is turned on. When I draw with a pencil or any other tool, and lets go of the mouse button, it takes almost a second before the mouse pointer appears again.

A second really isn't a long time, but I haven't noticed any delay when the undo is turned on. Are you editing a really large picture or one with lots of layers?

No

When I click on Neopaint, the image opens with Windows Picture and Fax viewer which remains highlighted in the list. I have clicked on Neopaint, used open button, used Dropdown at open and still no luck.

And Neopaint is still not in the list. There is Firefox, 7Zip even Neobook DBPro Report Designer but not Neopaint.

Just have to wait for an update to see what happens with the installer.
