Run More Than One Instance?

Postby TMcD » Sat Aug 19, 2017 10:07 pm

If I select the option to only run one instance, can someone rename the app and run more than one instance?

I'm not at computer right now so I can't test it. :)

Thanks.

I guess I'll create a workaround that'll stop most people.

The Read Only Variable called [CommandLine] can be queried ... from the Help file ...
[CommandLine]
Command line parameters passed to the publication. Multiple parameters are separated with carriage returns [#13]. The first parameter is always the name of the publication exe.

However, it might be tricky to differentiate between abcd.exe in FolderA from abcd.exe in FolderB ... which one is allowed ... and which one is not ? May have to store something in the Windows Registry.

Yeah I was thinking registry as well.

Though I really have no clue on the registry, scepter you don't want to mess it up.

Also, some will be using my app from a laptop, and some from a windows server.... does the windows server have a Registry? If so, does it work the same? (That's the question.) :D

Earlier, I thought you were talking about two copies of the program on the same machine (from different folders on the machine).

If the program is stored on a folder shared amongst many (client) machines, then, the "Registry approach" is not going to help.

You might consider using an encrypted/password protected database on the same shared folder as the program ... have your program read/write controlling information in it.

does the windows server have a Registry?

I don't think so ... when a user on a client machine (desktop, laptop) runs your program (even if it is stored on a server), his/her Registry is on his/her client machine.

To clarify:

It's an app that runs 24/7.

Some people will choose to have a laptop (or even a desktop) left on to run the software.

Some people will upload the app to a windows server to not use a home laptop/computer to run the app 24/7.
