Why won't the ^ character appear on a button face?

Postby Enigman » Tue Sep 02, 2014 11:34 pm

Does anyone know why the ^ character (uppercase 6) will not appear when it is assigned to a button as the face character?

It appears on label objects and in text boxes, but when I enter it as the character for a button, no dice.

Thanks.

The ^ is a special key in button-caption.
The follwing character gets underlined. This was used to indicate which Letter is user for a hotkey.

Search for caret in the doc und you will find a page: Common properties

It’s usually a good idea to give your readers an indication that a short cut key is available. Many Windows programs identify a short cut key by underlining that letter in the button’s caption. You can do this in NeoBook by placing a caret character “^” in front of the letter in the caption to be underlined. For example: “^Next” will appear on screen as:

The ^ is a special key in button-caption.

That makes sense. But I am creating a virtual keyboard, so I need to be able to express all keyboard characters on a button face. Is there any way to make the caret actual show?

Thanks.

I use Alt-0136

X (Alt-0136) 2 ==== X ^ 2

See "Character Map", Accesories=>System Tools=>Character Map (circumflex accent)

I use Alt-0136

I don't have a clue how to enter an Alt sequence into a button caption. I can use [#136] and that works for the similar character farther down the ASCII set, but that is not the caret, it is a smaller symbol. If I use [#94] then it translates to the caret, but again doesn't show.

Thanks.

How about using the ascii code 94 for the caret character?

[#94]

should do it.

How about using the ascii code 94 for the caret character?

[#94] translates to the caret, then the button treats it like a literal caret and tries to underline the next character. The result is a blank button. I need a way to tell the button to ignore the caret special property, or I need to make a graphic button face. I was hoping to avoid that.

Thanks.

![#94]

Nope ... that just displays an exclamation point.

What about using the / and \ characters? For example:

/\

Make the font a little smaller than the other buttons and it looks like a caret.

Another option is to use an image.

Oh Dave ... really? A cheezy solution? I'll use the smaller [#136] or make a special key cap graphic before I do that. :)

Thanks.

Cheesy?

 LOL ... I'm a little "Retentive" about using two characters to make a facsimile of the right one. I went ahead and made a special button graphic for that key.

I would have suggested adding a "make this caption literal" character, such as using ^^ to show one caret, or escaping it \^, but it would soooooooo not be worth your time to do that for the rare occasion when someone wants the caret on a button face. It only took me minutes to make the graphic button.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I'm glad you found an acceptable (non-cheesy) solution.
